A LOCAL GEM THAT CELEBRATES REAL FOOD
One of my favourite parts of being That Wellness Mum is discovering how chefs bring wholefood cooking to life in their own kitchens. I recently spent an evening at A Pin of Salt in Cardiff learning how they prepare their authentic, wholesome Italian meals — and I left inspired, full, and even more convinced that eating out can absolutely fit into a healthy lifestyle.
From the moment I walked in, the scent of garlic, olive oil, and simmering tomato sauce felt like home. The kitchen was alive — pans sizzling, dough stretching, laughter between chefs.
BEHIND THE SCENES: COOKING WITH THE CHEF
I joined the head chef for the afternoon, rolling up my sleeves to help prepare a few of their signature dishes.
Together we made Gnocchi Sorrentina and a Rigatoni Butternut Squash and Sausage. Every ingredient had a purpose — nothing processed, nothing artificial. It was a reminder that when you start with good, whole ingredients, cooking becomes simple, joyful, and deeply satisfying.
A THREE-COURSE MEAL MADE WITH LOVE
After our time in the kitchen, I sat down to enjoy a full three-course meal — each dish beautifully balanced, rich in flavour, and bursting with freshness. From the first bite to the last, it was the kind of meal that nourishes both body and soul.
What I loved most about A Pin of Salt is their commitment to real food. Everything is handmade daily — the sauces, the bread, even the desserts. There’s such intention in their cooking, and it shows.
WHAT THIS EXPERIENCE TAUGHT ME
This experience reminded me that eating out can be every bit as wholesome as home cooking — when the ingredients are fresh and the hands behind the food truly care. A Pin of Salt is proof that balance and pleasure can exist on the same plate.
“Eat Out, Eat Well: Finding Balance Beyond the Kitchen”
Life’s about balance. We can’t cook every meal at home — and we shouldn’t have to. Eating out can be a beautiful part of a healthy life when we choose places that share our love for whole, nourishing food.
That’s exactly why I started this series — to show that eating out and eating well can go hand in hand.
If you’re in Cardiff, A Pin of Salt is a must-visit. You’ll taste the difference that fresh, whole ingredients make.
