What Makes This Healthy Banana Bread Different?

There are hundreds of healthy banana bread recipes online, but I wanted to create one that truly delivers on both flavour and nutrition. After testing healthier versions over the years, I found many were either too dry or too dense. So, I created a loaf that still feels like a treat while using simple, wholesome ingredients I can happily serve my family.

Instead of using refined sugar, this recipe is naturally sweetened with honey and ripe bananas. Plus, wholewheat flour and ground flaxseed add extra fibre, while a combination of butter and olive oil creates a soft, moist crumb. Finished with crunchy walnuts, rolled oats and a drizzle of honey, it’s every bit as delicious as it looks.

It’s proof that a healthy banana bread doesn’t have to be dry, bland or boring!

Why Is This Banana Bread Healthier?

Traditional banana bread recipes are often loaded with refined sugar and made using white flour. While there’s absolutely a place for those recipes, I wanted to create a version that’s made with more wholesome ingredients while still tasting indulgent.

Here’s why this recipe is a healthier alternative:

  • Naturally sweetened with honey instead of refined white sugar.
  • Wholewheat flour provides more fibre than regular white flour.
  • Ripe bananas add natural sweetness, potassium and moisture.
  • Ground flaxseed increases the fibre content and provides plant-based omega-3 fats.
  • Walnuts contribute heart-healthy unsaturated fats and a satisfying crunch.
  • A blend of butter and olive oil creates a beautifully moist loaf while using less butter than many traditional recipes.
  • Simple whole-food ingredients with no unnecessary additives.
  • Perfect for breakfast or snacks, helping keep you fuller for longer thanks to the combination of fibre, healthy fats and natural carbohydrates.

The Secret to Perfect Healthy Banana Bread

Over the years, I’ve discovered that a few small details can completely transform homemade banana bread. These simple tips will help you achieve a soft, moist loaf every time.

Use Very Ripe Bananas

The darker the bananas, the better. Brown, spotty bananas are naturally sweeter, mash more easily and create the richest banana flavour.

Weigh Your Ingredients

Kitchen scales provide the most accurate results, especially when measuring flour. Too much flour is one of the most common reasons banana bread turns out dry.

Don’t Overmix the Batter

Once the dry ingredients are added, mix only until everything is combined. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour and can lead to a heavy, dense loaf.

Use Both Baking Powder and Bicarbonate of Soda

This combination creates a lighter, fluffier texture while helping the loaf rise evenly.

Finish with an Oat Topping

Rolled oats, chopped walnuts and a light drizzle of honey create a beautifully golden crust that looks just as good as it tastes.

Let It Cool

It can be tempting to slice straight into warm banana bread, but allowing it to cool for at least 20–30 minutes helps the loaf finish setting and makes slicing much easier.

How to Make Healthy Banana Bread

Making this healthy banana bread recipe is simple and requires just one mixing bowl. The key to creating a soft, moist loaf is using very ripe bananas, gently mixing the batter and avoiding overbaking.

1. Prepare Your Ingredients

Start by preheating your oven and lining a loaf tin with baking paper. Measure out your ingredients and allow your eggs to come closer to room temperature if possible for the best texture.

2. Mash the Bananas

Mash your ripe bananas in a large mixing bowl until mostly smooth. A few small lumps are completely fine and will add extra moisture and flavour to your banana bread.

3. Mix the Wet Ingredients

Add the melted butter, olive oil, honey, eggs, vanilla extract and plant milk to the mashed bananas. Whisk everything together until well combined.

4. Add the Dry Ingredients

Add the wholewheat flour, ground flaxseed, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon and salt. Gently fold everything together until just combined.

Be careful not to overmix the batter, as this can make your banana bread heavy instead of soft and tender.

5. Add the Walnuts and Topping

Fold through the chopped walnuts, then transfer the batter into your prepared loaf tin. Sprinkle over the rolled oats and extra walnuts, finishing with a small drizzle of honey for a golden, rustic topping.

6. Bake Until Golden

Bake until the loaf is beautifully golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached.

Allow your banana bread to cool before slicing. This helps the texture set and gives you those perfect bakery-style slices.

7. Enjoy!

Serve warm or at room temperature with a cup of tea, spread with butter, topped with Greek yoghurt or enjoyed as a wholesome grab-and-go snack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How ripe should bananas be for banana bread?

The best bananas for banana bread are very ripe with lots of brown spots or even mostly black skins. As bananas ripen, they become naturally sweeter and softer, giving your banana bread a richer flavour and a beautifully moist texture.

Can I use frozen bananas?

Absolutely! Frozen bananas work brilliantly in this recipe. Simply thaw them completely, drain away any excess liquid if needed, then mash and use as normal. They’re perfect if you’ve been saving overripe bananas for baking.

Why is my banana bread dense?

A dense loaf is usually caused by overmixing the batter or adding too much flour. For the softest texture, gently fold the wet and dry ingredients together until just combined. Measuring your flour with kitchen scales will also help produce consistent results.

Can I use plain flour instead of wholewheat flour?

Yes. Plain (all-purpose) flour works perfectly if you prefer a lighter, softer loaf. Simply substitute it using the same quantity. The banana bread will have a slightly softer crumb and a milder flavour.

Can I replace the honey with maple syrup?

Yes. Maple syrup is an excellent substitute and can be used in the same quantity as honey. It creates a slightly different flavour but still produces a deliciously moist banana bread.

How do I know when banana bread is cooked?

Insert a skewer or toothpick into the centre of the loaf. If it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs attached, it’s ready. If there’s still wet batter on the skewer, bake for another 5–10 minutes and test again.

Can I freeze banana bread?

Yes! Once completely cooled, wrap the loaf or individual slices tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost at room temperature or gently warm slices in the toaster or microwave.

Can I make this recipe into muffins?

Definitely. Divide the batter between a lined muffin tin, filling each case about three-quarters full. Bake at 180°C (160°C fan) for 20–25 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.

Is this healthy banana bread suitable for breakfast?

I think so! Made with wholewheat flour, honey, flaxseed and walnuts, it’s a more nourishing alternative to traditional banana bread. I love serving a slice with Greek yoghurt and fresh berries for a balanced breakfast or satisfying snack.

Ingredients

For the Banana Bread

  • 3 very ripe medium bananas mashed (about 300g | 1¼ cups)
  • 85 g unsalted butter melted (6 tbsp)
  • 15 g extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp
  • 100 g honey ⅓ cup
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 60 ml unsweetened oat or almond milk ¼ cup

Dry Ingredients

  • 200 g wholewheat flour 1⅔ cups
  • 30 g ground flaxseed ⅓ cup
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda baking soda
  • tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • 75 g chopped walnuts ¾ cup

Oat Topping

  • 20 g rolled oats ¼ cup
  • 15 g chopped walnuts 2 tbsp
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp honey for drizzling

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F. Grease a 2lb loaf tin with butter or cooking spray, then line it with baking paper, leaving a little overhang on the sides to help lift the loaf out after baking.
  • Place the ripe bananas into a large mixing bowl and mash them well using a fork until mostly smooth. A few small lumps are perfectly fine and add lovely texture to the finished loaf.
  • Pour the melted butter, olive oil and honey into the mashed bananas. Add the eggs, vanilla extract and oat milk, then whisk everything together until smooth and fully combined.
  • Add the wholewheat flour, ground flaxseed, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon and salt directly to the bowl.
  • Using a spatula or wooden spoon, gently fold the mixture together until there are no dry streaks of flour remaining. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the banana bread dense.
  • Gently fold the chopped walnuts through the batter until evenly distributed.
  • The batter should be thick but easy to spoon into the loaf tin.
  • Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf tin and smooth the surface with the back of a spoon.
  • Sprinkle over the rolled oats and chopped walnuts, then dust lightly with the remaining cinnamon. Finish with a drizzle of honey over the top to help create a beautifully golden crust.
  • Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the loaf has risen, the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  • If the top starts browning too quickly, loosely cover the loaf with foil during the final 15 minutes of baking.
  • Leave the banana bread to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before carefully lifting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Although it’s tempting to slice straight in, allowing the loaf to cool helps it finish setting, making it easier to cut clean slices.

Recipe Notes & Substitutions

This healthy banana bread recipe is flexible and easy to adapt depending on what you have available. Here are some simple swaps to suit different dietary needs and preferences.

Higher protein option: Add 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder and reduce the flour by around 30g to keep the texture balanced.

Butter: Replace with melted coconut oil, avocado oil or an extra virgin olive oil for a dairy-free option.

Honey: Maple syrup or date syrup can be used instead in the same quantity for a vegan-friendly sweetener option.

Eggs: For an egg-free banana bread, replace each egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water, left to thicken for 5–10 minutes).

Wholewheat flour: Use white wholewheat flour, plain flour (all-purpose flour), spelt flour or wholemeal flour. The texture may vary slightly depending on the flour used.

Gluten-free option: Replace the wholewheat flour with a good-quality gluten-free flour blend designed for baking. Add an extra tablespoon of flaxseed if needed for structure.

Ground flaxseed: Chia seeds can be used instead, although the texture may be slightly different.

Walnuts: Swap for pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for a nut-free option.

Nut-free option: Simply leave out the walnuts and use extra oats, pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for added texture.

Plant milk: Any milk will work, including oat milk, almond milk, soy milk or dairy milk.

Honey sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter banana bread, increase the honey slightly to 115g. For a less sweet loaf, reduce it to 75–80g.

Extra flavour: Add dark chocolate chips, blueberries, chopped apple, raisins or a little orange zest for a different variation.
